Grain boundary scars and spherical crystallography.
We describe experimental investigations of the structure of two-dimensional spherical crystals. The crystals, formed by beads self-assembled on water droplets in oil, serve as model systems for exploring very general theories about the minimum-energy configurations of particles with arbitrary repulsive interactions on curved surfaces. Above a critical system size we find that crystals develop d...

— Ordered states on spheres require a minimum number of topological defects. For the case of crystalline order, triangular lattices must be interrupted by an array of at least 12 five-fold disclination defects, typically sitting at the vertices of an icosahedron. For R >> a, where R is the sphere radius and a the particle spacing, the energy associated with these defects is very large. This ene...
متن کاملGrain Boundary Property Determination through Measurement of Triple Junction Geometry and Crystallography
Microstructure controls the properties of most useful materials. Thus an ability to control microstructure through the processing of materials is a key to optimization of materials performance. Most materials are polycrystalline and their grain structure is a very important aspect of their microstructure. Thanks to their complexity there is a great variety of grain boundary types even in relati...
متن کاملFive-parameter grain boundary distribution in grain boundary engineered brass
We report the first application of a five-parameter determination of grain boundary types to grain boundary engineered alpha-brass. The most important findings were that the distribution of planes showed a prevalence of <110> tilt boundaries, especially asymmetric tilt types, and the presence of <111> twist boundaries. This distribution resulted from the low energy of these boundary types.
متن کاملOf Grain Boundary Facets
Abatraet-constraints on diffusive creep cavity growth along grain boundary facets are studied for the limiting case when all facets oriented approximately normal to an applied tensik load am uniformly cavitated. This situation represents the opposite limiting case to when cavitated facets are we&sepamted and do not intemct with each other. The analysis is done for a 3-D periodic polycrystallii ...
